Corporations: a monopoly on power

How protected do you think your most inner thoughts and actions are? Do you think you are morally impervious to outside influences?

I want you to answer these next few questions and then decide how much you are influenced by outside sources.

  • What percentage of your awake time do you spend on social media?
  • How often do you judge your own daily worth based on the clothes you wear?
  • How often do you judge your personal worth based on the brand of makeup you are wearing?
  • Apple or Microsoft?
  • iPhone or Droid
  • Honda or Toyota?
Take a second and think about the answers you've just given. Do they have something in common? If you're like the normal American, then your answers will suggest that your life is extremely influenced by corporations.

How much power do corporations hold? Well if you believe that money is power, then they hold more than anyone else in the world. Out of the top 100 economies in the world, 51 are corporations, and 49 are governments.

Some may say that governments hold more power than corporations, but the more that I've researched this, the more that I've realized that corporations and governments are extremely entangled. Governments impose themselves on corporations, but corporations have lobbyists that go and directly influence governmental policy.

This is all for now! Next time get ready for more historical precedence on this topic, as well as lots of visuals.

  1. I like the question format with bullets. I think that this allows easy skimming.
