Project Log: Jackson Berg

Hi I'm Jackson Berg. Here I'll keep you posted on the working I'm doing on my individual project as well as contributions to the overall group project.

Personal Project

  • 3/2/16- Let's end Foreign Aid
    • In this article I explored why governments giving foreign aid is ineffective and should be replaced with private efforts. I am interested in the topic but I don't have the person angle.
  • 3/8/16- "A Case Study In Quidditch: Why social media and other digital tools are actually creating stronger interpersonal relationships"
    • Started a new topic here replacing the post about foreign aid. I really think that this topic will generate more interest due to it's more interesting and personal angle. It seems to be generating more views.
  • 3/16/16- Quidditch: Digital Collaboration is building real world relationships
    • This article just introduced the blog with a video. I need to revamp the social media posting since it received no online commentary outside of the blog.
  • 3/17-3/19 Gathering Feedback.
    • Sent out my blog to social media in a more compelling way and got good feedback, including face to face discussions.
    • My first iteration blog now has close to 100 views and seven comments! I think I have enough feedback to launch a full fledged second iteration.
  • 3/28/16- Social Media is Creating Real Friendships version 2- I used the feedback from my original blog to create a second version. It is an improvement but more of a model for my next iteration which I hope to have significant design changes.
  • 4/4/16- Social Media Is Creating Real Friendships: A Case Study In Quidditch- The final version of my blog. The post underwent few changes to text but significant design changes with more visuals and increase ease of skimming. A video and improved captions and order were added. The only thing remaining is to link to other final project, especially opposing view points.

Individual Project- My Progress

  • 3/14/16
  • Who's In Control?
  • I actually googled "Why Facebook and YouTube use advertisements?". It led me to this page: http://adage.com/article/digital/facebook-youtube-video-ad-buy/297010/. It talked about that you only see YouTube ads when you are logged into your account, and that they show specific ads based on your demographics (age, gender, location). This led to another internet search and very interesting discussions with friends about being targeted by social media- and how much of it are we actually seeing.
  • Next, I will actually try to add facts and statistics to my next post to back up my claims. I can go a lot farther with these thoughts, but at the time I didn't necessarily have any. I am excited that this is where my topic is going.

Group Project- My Contributions

  • http://criticalcomms.blogspot.com/2016/03/whos-in-control.html : "Who's In Control"- Here I discussed how Social Media is being run by our opinions, which are not always enteirely educated.
  • http://criticalcomms.blogspot.com/2016/03/understanding-humanism.html; "Understanding Humanism" - Here I played with my first topic on how humanism has changed throughout the ages, but asked myself: is our humanism taking over the society and making it crumble?
  • 3/21/16 Bryce and I made a video introducing our topic of Open/Controlled. We finally linked our topics together- because of video accessibility and bias information being spread through different web sources, we are losing our control over logical reasoning, and are being emotionally motivated. Acting on emotions can lead to an over-sharing of personal information that jeopardizes personal security and privacy.

Individual Project: My Progress

  • 3/2/16- "When is Change too Much?" I connected the concept of health care with the French Revolution in order to describe when change was too much. I noticed that our health care system was in shambles because of the government that we are a part of. I used the book "over our heads" in order to describe why change was too much
  • 3/5/16-"The Detriment of Society" While trying to keep the healthcare system in my argument I related the detriment of our health to the use of digital things. This seemed to coincide more with what people needed to be seeing. I argued that why are we getting unhealthier when our technology is advancing so rapidly? I forgot however, to add pictures to explain my concepts. It was good to receive feedback from Jackson Berg and Gideon Burton on why my concept was flawed.
  • 3/8/16-I explained what the lost generation meant back in the day and what it means now as a result of comments made by my peers. Comments and revisions are always welcome with my blog.

Group Project: My Contributions

  • 3/5/16- With my post "The Detriment of Society" I tried my best to include the digital wilderness in my post. I explored how we are losing our physical identity because of the digital wilderness. This idea was not yet completely formed, but it helped form the main category of losing our identity that our class is forming. I tried my best to connect it to the lost generation.
  • 3/8/16- "The Other Lost Generation" I feel like my concept has developed into a topic into which I can further research and publish. I had to completely change the direction of my project so that it would fit with the class theme. I titled my blog post The Other Generation and explained how we are getting lost in the digital wilderness as a society. I have contributed to the class project by explaining some of the identity crisis through technology use.
  • 3/8/16-Most importantly I feel like my historical cyclical connections of Strauss and Howe will help other people see the importance of historical uses. I contrasted my topic with the lost generation. The class now sees that they need to use history.

Personal Project Posts:

My first article where I lay out the dangerous effects of faulty or incomplete examples. I focus more on evidence than on proposing a solution. This led to the second post which had more to do with the root cause and possible solutions.

An article refining my point about the power of obscured or over-hyped opinions, with more of a focus on the instigators. I'm currently trying to decide whether to focus on the ideas and people who cause this event, or on how to improve our own thinking to avoid such mental traps.

For the Greater Good:

This was a write-up on the forms of communication used in a documentary, and how they may be used to make our presentation interesting. Having looked at form, I think now I should lean toward research and furthering ideas instead.

A script and proposed format for our video. We've done a good job of consolidating the arguments and forming a coherent thesis (The entire script is written). Now the biggest remaining need is to prepare the technical side of the video and to begin filming.

Project Log: Katelyn Dalton

Hi, my name is Katelyn Dalton, and social definitions and online interactions matter to me because I'm a college student trying to learn how to market myself in a world where our digital footprint says more about who we are than we ourselves can.
